Overnight video EEG monitoring

The most informative method of analysing brain activity is EEG monitoring of sleep, i.e. electroencephalography throughout the night. This study allows you to assess brain activity in all phases of rest: waking period, drowsiness, sleep itself and the waking phase.

EEG video monitoring is a more informative method, because during the study it is possible to obtain more information about the work of the brain. For example, it is during the night rest that epileptiform activity is often manifested, which allows neurologists to make an accurate diagnosis and prescribe the correct individual treatment.

In the course of such monitoring, video recordings are made, allowing the comparison of the video sequence and brain activity.

Due to this, specialists can:

  • determine the type of seizure;
  • identify the focus (the area where there are pathological changes);
  • react quickly if the child needs emergency medical care.

EEG monitoring with video is indicated for problems and disorders:

  • sleep (insomnia, shallow sleep, restless and short sleep, frequent awakenings in the middle of the night, nightmares, somnambulism, urinary incontinence);
  • memory;
  • mental development,
  • speech defects;
  • emotional and mental state (irritability, aggression, stress, depression, anxiety, etc.).

Preparing the baby for night monitoring

It is especially important to explain in detail what will happen if the baby is quite anxious and suspicious, does not immediately get used to strangers. Electroencephalography itself is painless and does not cause any physical discomfort. Sleeping with electrodes is convenient, as a special cap and flat electrodes are used.

If the child understands the story-role-play, you can tell him that he will have to travel to space, but before this it will be necessary to pass a special test with the use of equipment. You can come up with any plot, it all depends on both your imagination and the hobbies and interests of the kid.

Other recommendations for preparation:

  • the day before you need to wash your head, but adults should not apply special styling products afterwards;
  • girls should remove different jewellery (earrings).

Contraindications for video EEG monitoring

There are no absolute prohibitions for conducting such a study. Relative contraindications, because of which such a check of the work and activity of the brain should be postponed to a later date, include the following:

  • colds causing fever;
  • eating disorders, including diarrhoea;
  • skin rashes and/or wounds on the head where the electrodes are applied.

Results of EEG monitoring

The process of deciphering the overnight monitoring is handled by a functional diagnostician and a psychophysiologist.

In terms of time it takes from 2 to 5 days. The result in the form of printed and stitched brain activity monitoring with the conclusion and diagnosis; EEG recording on a flash drive.
