The Tomatis Method

This is a system of audio-vocal training. The aim of the method is to improve the brain’s ability to perceive and process information perceived by the auditory analyser. Through Tomatis sessions, the perception of sounds and listening in general is reprogrammed. Tomatis is a pedagogy of neurosensory auditory stimulation. It is important to realise that the method is an additional technique that cannot replace the work of a specialist, therapist or educator. Nevertheless, it can maximise the expected results by helping the person to better absorb therapy or training.

Effectiveness of the method:

  • Rhythm, movement, and speech are improved;
  • Attention span and concentration increases;
  • Social interaction – sociability, listening to others and communicating to others;
  • Speech and motor control, auditory discernment and sensitivity, musical expression, self-esteem, mood, motivation;

Indicated for:

  • Delayed speech development and psycho-verbal development (DDD and FTD)

Tomatis therapy is also used to prepare for childbirth and to increase the effectiveness of learning foreign languages.

What are the contraindications:

  • epileptic activity,
  • acute period of any disease,
  • severe arterial hypertension
  • tumour diseases.

Classes can be started from the age of 2. But an electroencephalogram must be taken before them

Preparation for Tomatis therapy

Before starting therapy, the child or adult undergoes an initial consultation. This includes, first of all, a detailed interview and a detailed analysis of the EEG. This consultation allows us to analyse the client’s capabilities and to predict the possible outcome of Tomatis therapy.

The recommended duration of therapy is 3 courses of 14 sessions. The breaks between courses should be 4 to 6 weeks (between the first and second course) and 6 to 8 weeks (between the second and third course). For any subsequent courses, the breaks can be 10 to 12 weeks.

Duration of Tomatis Therapy

The number of Tomatis Therapy cycles needed to achieve the best results is determined on an individual basis and depends on many factors, including:

  • Age of the child: Younger children usually require more cycles.
  • Theseverity of the problem: The more severe the difficulties, the more cycles may be required.
  • The individual characteristics of the child: Some children respond to therapy more quickly, while others take longer.
  • Combination with other methods: Thomas therapy is often used in combination with other methods of correction, which may affect the number of cycles required.

General guidelines:

  • Minimum 3 cycles: It is usually recommended to complete at least 3 cycles of Thomas therapy to achieve a lasting effect.
  • Break between cycles: A break is needed between cycles of therapy to allow the brain to absorb the information received. Usually, the break is 4-8 weeks.
  • Cycle duration: One cycle of Tomatis therapy usually lasts 13-15 days, with daily sessions of 2 hours.
